"An Amazing sound”

-Wayne Escoffery, Grammy-winning saxophonist and composer

Double Quartet

Double Quartet is a new project that combines the traditional jazz quartet and string quartet formats into a unique ensemble that brims with color— searching melodies and film-inspired harmonies breathe emotion into grooves inspired by afro-Cuban music, EDM, and progressive rock. In live performance, animated graphics accompany the music and weave an immersive musical narrative that obliquely bridges film and fiction.

Double Quartet boasts some of the most talented musicians in Denver, including Alex Vittal, Shane Dähler, New York stalwart Seajun Kwon, and members of the Sphere Ensemble string orchestra.

Double Quartet has been commissioned to write, perform, and record original music at the TANK Center for Sonic Arts in Rangely, CO.

Double Quartet started with an idea I had in college— to bring together a jazz quartet and a string quartet for a multimedia performance under animated graphics in a planetarium. That performance happened in early 2020, in my final semester, just weeks before the pandemic began.

On the other side of the pandemic, I recorded this music with some amazing musicians in Los Angeles.

Each of the pieces is based on a short story, a memory, or a person that's shaped my life. There are four main "movements" (Biblioteca de Babel, Tlon, Moon Milk, and Braking Radiation), which are separated by short interludes— little vignettes that prepare the piece that follows. Like the live performance, the album is meant to be heard in order, but you can listen however you like.

Enjoy!
